She was one of the fastest 12 year old swimmers in the world with a personal best of 28.3 seconds for 50m freestyle and just three years later she won her first international medals - two gold and two silver at the Canada Cup in Alberta.
Swimming Coach Harry Gallagher told Lisa to get her teeth straightened as he forecast great things for this swimming sensation…. and great things she has achieved, succeeding in both sport and business.
Lisa Curry is the proud holder of 30 medals in international competitions. The three times Olympic and multiple Commonwealth Games contender has a total count of 15 Gold, 7 Silver and 8 Bronze International medals.
Her collection of world rankings started at the young age of 15, when she was ranked number of five in the world, for the 100m breaststroke. Then, from 1977 through 1992, Lisa went on to win 15 National Long Course Open Titles.
She has competed in two world championships, one in Berlin (1978) and the other in Guayaquil, Equador (1982).
Success was also experienced in three Commonwealth Games including 1978 in Edmonton where she won Silver, 1982 in her home city of Brisbane winning 3 Gold and 1 Bronze; and at the 1990 Auckland Games, where as a mother, aged 27, she won 4 Gold and 1 Silver.
As an Olympian, Lisa represented Australia in Moscow (1980), Los Angeles (1984) and at age 30, and mother of two children she swam at the Barcelona Games (1992), swimming best times and ranking her 9th in the world. She describes her Barcelona experience as the ‘greatest event ever’.
Lisa Curry is the only Australian swimmer to have held Commonwealth and Australian records in such a variety of events, from 50m to 400m, and in every stroke except backstroke. She has been in the top 25 in the world since she started participating in international events.
Today, Lisa, continues her sporting pursuits. Competing in six Molokai to Oahu World Championship Outrigger Canoe events her team has met with success. In 1991 her team was placed 4th, 13th in 1992, 3rd in 1994, 2nd in 1996 and in 1997 the team won the race, becoming the first Australian team to win the World Championship. Then, in 1998, they returned to Hawaii and successfully defended their World Championship Title. On a local level she has coached the Panamuna Outrigger Canoe Club for the past ten years.
In 1996 Lisa took up another sport. This time, Surf Boat rowing, and after only five months of learning and training her team, won the State Surf Life Saving Championship.
